Color Fabulous: Decorate using the color wheel
Each week we provide Color Fabulous tips that help you punctuate your surroundings. Here’s a look at the color wheel, putting theory to practice.
This guest post provides some key points on which color choices are best suited for the type the mood you may want to achieve.
Color Theory in Interior Painting
Color accounts for 60% of our response to an object or place. The buzz about color is called color psychology, but the affects colors have on us are both physical and psychological. Keeping that in mind, choosing a color palette can be a daunting task, so consider the following tips when painting inside your home:
- Consider the mood. Think about how you feel in different rooms in your home. We sometimes associate negative feelings when doing laundry, which can be a direct result of the color inside of the room. The laundry room is a perfect place to experiment with cheerful hues if you are unsure of where to start or nervous about going outside of your color comfort zone.
- Choose peaceful colors. Your bedroom and bathroom are often the only places you get some peace and quiet. Pale blues and soft greens are peaceful colors that improve restfulness. If you find that your life is stressful, painting a soft hue of blue and green in your bedroom and living room can help you to unwind and relax.
- Opt for colors that create harmony. The combination of colors in a room can create harmony. Complimentary colors sit opposite of each other on the color wheel. Black and white contrast each other and work well with almost any accent colors.
- Don’t be afraid of bright hues. To project optimism and energy, consider painting with hues of yellow. Yellow walls can lift your spirits. A strong yellow color can be effective when used as an accent with indirect light. Be careful not to over stimulate with intensely bright hues. Some bright colors lead to unrest and irritability.
